Best Comments You've Seen [link]

There is an illustrious thread on stackoverflow that goes a long way to support the anticommentist case. Especially poignant is the reply which reads:

It speaks volumes about our profession that when asked about the "best comment", we all answer with the worst comments we can find…

I would contend that it speaks volumes about the usefulness of commenting code. All these examples drive home the four pillars of anticommentism:

  1. Redundant or otherwise unhelpful when accurate
  2. Counterproductive when inaccurate
  3. Are usually not maintained and therefore inaccurate
  4. Usually admissions of guilt on the part of lazy or bad programmers in either case
